There can be many causes such as storm and wind damage, structural weakness (V-shaped crotch), mechanical damage, rubbing limbs, and long heavy limbs. Many times, the tree can be pruned to eliminate the weakness. When the problem cannot be pruned away, it may be necessary to install hardware such as cabling or bracing. Cabling, bracing or a combination of the two can help support a poorly attached or weakened limb.
Cabling and bracing involves attaching a cable between branches to limit limb motion and to reduce stress on the crotch or branches. For bracing, we use bolts and threaded rods for securing weak or split crotches.
Properly installed systems may be hard to see, but they should not be forgotten. Your cabling should be inspected by a Certified Arborist at least once a year, and also after each major storm, to ensure your cabling system remains safe and functioning properly.
